October 2025 Spotlight: Karen Fowler
About Karen Fowler
Karen is a 59-year-old mother of two daughters and a proud grandmother of two grandsons. Throughout her life she has dedicated her time to helping others. From family and friends to those in her community, Karen has been a positive light to so many in need.
An optimistic, faith-filled woman with a warm heart, Karen has always found joy in helping others. She has assembled and delivered hundreds of goody bags to homeless individuals around Philadelphia and spent over 13 years volunteering every other Saturday at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House. She also served as a hospital “Baby Cuddler”, providing love and prayers to newborns affected by addiction.
Before her illness, Karen was a motorcycle enthusiast who loved the hills, curves, and wind of the open road. She enjoyed healthy cooking, reading, exploring new places, and listening to KLOVE.
Karen’s Health Journey
On Mother’s Day 2023, Karen suffered a TIA (mini stroke). While hospitalized, she received unexpected news; she was diagnosed end stage renal disease, neuropathy, anemia, and diabetes. Karen had been neglecting her annual checkups due to her busy schedule and overall feeling healthy. She now cautions people not to ignore their annual physicals and bloodwork, reminding others that “ignorance is not bliss”
On July 17, 2024, while hooked up to a dialysis machine, Karen received a life-changing call; she was getting a new kidney. Doctors had warned it could take 5–7 years, but after only eight months on the list, she miraculously received her gift of life. Karen remains deeply thankful to her donor and their family for this incredible blessing.
Since her transplant, she has been steadily improving but continues to face several serious challenges, including low blood pressure episodes, worsening leg pain, numbness, weakness, and difficulty with walking and balance. She also receives injections in both eyes every four months to manage retinopathy.
Why She Needs Our Help Now
This month, the Transplant Alliance Foundation is proud to spotlight Karen as our Mission Monday recipient to help raise funds for a critical treatment not covered by insurance. This specialized therapy could greatly improve her neuropathy, a painful and progressive condition that affects her legs, balance, and mobility.
Without this treatment, Karen faces the real possibility of becoming wheelchair bound. The funds raised through this month’s Mission Monday will go directly toward helping her receive the care she needs to stay mobile, independent, and continue living her life of faith and service.
