March 2026 Spotlight: Joseph Locastro

Joseph Locastro is known by everyone who meets him as a positive, strong, hardworking, and deeply caring man. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, he now lives in Kissimmee, Florida with his wife of 28 years, Diane. Though he has no biological children, he lovingly raised three children who proudly call him Dad and consider themselves blessed to have him. A U.S. Air Force veteran, former superintendent, and talented stained glass and woodworking artist, Joseph has always been someone who creates beauty and gives selflessly to others.

In 2022, Joseph was diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disease and Pulmonary Fibrosis. His condition gradually worsened, and after a serious case of pneumonia, he went into respiratory failure. He was eventually referred to UF Health Shands Hospital for a double lung transplant. Despite concerns about his age and past cancer history, doctors saw his determination to live for his family and listed him for transplant. He received new lungs in August 2025.

Joseph’s recovery has been filled with serious complications, including multiple surgeries, infections, medication reactions, and long ICU stays. He later developed a rare fungal infection that spread to his brain, requiring additional brain surgery in January. Even through months of pain and setbacks, Joseph has remained unbelievably kind and grateful, always thanking his nurses and encouraging those around him. Hospital staff often say he is their favorite patient — a true reflection of his character.

His long recovery has placed emotional and financial strain on the family. Diane has been living near the hospital for months while unable to work, and their children travel frequently to help care for him. Though the road is still uncertain, Joseph continues to fight every day with hope, strength, and the same loving spirit that has defined his entire life.
